What is airsoft?

Airsoft is a team based sport, in which the teams are given scenarios with objectives to complete.
 
Players do this by eliminating members of the opposing team by means Automatic Electric Guns (AEG) or Realistic Imitation Firearm (RIF) which fire a 6mm BB at a safe velocity.
 Some pyrotechnics can be used by players these are specifically designed for use in airsoft games and the casings of these are biodegradable. The diagram below shows the internal make up of an AEG.

What is an AEG?

The AEG  is powered by a rechargeable battery which operates a small electric motor that cycles a plunger that draws in air and uses it to push out the BB. AEG’s have a maximum range of around 35-45 metres. The velocity that the AEG fires at will not break the skin or cause serious injury. The only danger would be from eye injuries which is why eye/face protection is required and the wearing of it is enforced by safety marshals in the game area.

These operate by using a battery the same as those used in radio control cars, usually 8.4v this operates a small electric motor which is about 2 inches long and is usually mounted in the pistol grip. This in turn cycles 3 gears which pull back a plastic piston compressing a spring. The pulling back of this piston draws in a small amount of air, when the piston releases and is pushed forward by the spring it is this small amount of air that is used to propel the bb.
